Pastor Wes visited Israel for his 60th birthday - a gift from members of King's Church International. He travelled with his two sons, Wesley and James, and his son-in-law, Drikus Erasmus.

Pastor Wes described his visit, the first time he had been to Israel, in the Sunday Service talk, "I made it to the Promised Land."

Following the trip, Wesley was asked by Christian today to write about the experience. In a two part series, he describes what they encountered and gives some advice for a trip to the Holy Land.

Exploring Israel Part 1

What is striking while driving to Jerusalem along the motorway from Tel Aviv is the sheer gradient of the terrain. The road twists and turns as it climbs up through the hills towards Jerusalem. Trees line the rugged embankments. "A city on a hill" is a perfect description of the ancient city of David.

Israel is a modern yet ancient land. The road signs were errected by a state which is little more than 60 years old, yet one which represents over 3000 years of history.

Exploring Israel Part 2

Day two was a Dead Sea Day and Qumran. Only a 30 minute drive over the Mount of Olives and through the Judean desert, the traveller passes by the Inn of the Good Samaritan descending below sea level.

Jericho, a Palestinian town, can be seen from the motorway as the Dead Sea comes into view. Further beyond is Mount Nebo in Jordan from which Moses surveyed the Promised Land.
